Product Description
High school sweethearts
and nobody knew.
Ashleigh Pence had been the all-American high school girl: cheerleader, prom queen
and in love with another girl. Gina Granbury hasn’t thought about Calloway High in twenty years, but the arrival of the invitation to the class reunion brings back memories of Ashleigh and the betrayal that drove them apart.
With no real choice, Ashleigh has to go the event, hoping that it’s not the one reunion that Gina decides to attend after all these years. Gina had expected to dismiss the possibility as easily as she has during all the years since, but the curiosity is suddenly strong. Her long-broken heart has never mended, but that’s no reason to go back in time
is it?
Twenty years seem like yesterday in this latest passionate story from Golden Crown award winner Gerri Hill.

Classic Hill August 19, 2010 luvshoes I love Gerri Hill and have read all of her books. I enjoyed this one, albeit was predictable. I like Hill's work and was excited to see Pat and Carly re-emerg in this book. This is an enjoyable read. Yes, slow at times, but worth the effort. I liked both Gina and Ash, their characters were believeable, but it would have been nice to explore these two in their older years.
Great story August 15, 2010 Olga Silva (Miami, FL, US) I have always been a fan of Ms.Hill. Love prevails as shown on this latest book. Can't wait for the next one.
not the best but highly enjoyable August 14, 2010 Patricia (Netherlands) I've been reading Gerri Hill's books religiously for the last couple of years. I've come to be a big fan of her writing, so I'm sad to say this book was just a little bit of a disappointment, compared to her other works.
Now don't get me wrong, this is not my favorite of Gerri's, but it's still a VERY enjoyable read. I wish I could have given it 3,5 stars, really. Alas, it now came down to 3 stars.
The story here is about two women, Gina and Ashleigh, who used to secretly date in high school but split up due to a (as it later turns out) stupid misunderstanding. In the 20 years between then and now they never spoke or interacted, but at the same time they haven't been able to really move on. Now they finally meet again at their high school reunion. The spark is still there, but so are the feelings of betrayal and sadness over their lost love. Gerri takes us on the journey the two women take to rekindle their love together.
So why the mixed feelings about the story? The story itself is one that definitely speaks to my romantic-please-live-happily-ever-after-even-if-it's-the-biggest-stereotype-in-the-world side. But the execution this time felt off.
For one thing, there was a lot of going back and forth between past and present and Gina and Asleigh's point of views. While the flashbacks to the past explained a lot about the romance and how the characters got to the point where they are, the back and forth got -at times- really annoying to me. Especially with the mixed point of views added.
It had me thinking 'wait, where are we now and which character is this again?' and that kept me from absorbing the story like I usually do. I simply had to think too much to be able to connect to the characters.
Secondly, I felt like certain things were repeated too many times. It had me going 'oh, we're back to that again?'
Third, the conflict/obstacles in this book were all character driven. There really wasn't anything outside the characters that kept them apart, which frustrated me. Especially because (see above) some things were just repeated and it left me wishing they'd get over it already, lol.
Still, as I said I think this IS a highly enjoyable read. Especially for sappy people like me who like to emerge themselves in the idea of people having their one true love and the big happily ever after. It's lovely to read about how these two first got together against all odds and it put a big smile on my face to read about their high school love. The ending, though maybe a little too perfect, was cute and my previous frustration was forgotten by that point. I'm still a fan of Gerri Hill and I do look forward to her other books.
Please note; I wrote this review after reading it for the first time. I plan to read it again (I always do) and my opinion on some things may change after that :)
Not the best, but definitely not bad either. August 11, 2010 Audrey 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For someone who has read some of Gerri Hill's other works, I was a little disappointed by this long anticipated book. Not to say that it wasn't still entertaining. I did enjoy the book, but was just expecting something a little more captivating. I would have given it 3 and 1/2 stars if it was an option. The pace of the book is a little slow for my taste and rather than being absorbed by it, I often put the book down; not because I had other things to do, but because it simply got a little boring.
The romance between the characters was also a little hard for me to grasp. That is, in their older years. For their teenage years- when Ashleigh and Gina first meet- Gerri Hill does an awesome job of illustrating the spark and the innocent wonder of new found sexual desires that the teen years bring. In fact, I almost wish the entire book took place when the women were teens; it was more enjoyable reading those parts.
As for the characters, I loved them all, except for maybe Gina. Ashleigh's character was very three dimensional and very likable. Gina, however, felt a little flat and stereotypical: the classic lesbian jock. For some reason, her feelings and thoughts never felt real enough for me and I just felt Hill slacked a little bit with this character.
Otherwise, I fine book, if not just lacking a little bit. But if you're looking for a truly great lesbian read, Gerri Hill's "Scorpion" is fast paced and a hot page-turner!
Good Entertainment August 2, 2010 Astrid (Frankfurt, Germany) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ashleigh Pence and Gina Granburry have been high school sweethearts back in their youth, despite Ashleigh being the all-American high school girl (cheerleader, prom queen and so on). Unfortunately a betrayal drove them apart and they haven't been in touch ever since... until class reunion some twenty years or so later. And the attraction between them is still there when they meet.
I really enjoyed the story even though the ending of the book was a bit predictable (which romance isn't?). Gerri Hill is a gifted writer and Ashleigh and Gina are likeable heroines.
This isn't Gerri Hill's best book but it still is an overall enjoyable read, good for a few hours of entertainment.
